Iron deficiency in Heart Failure with Dr Rani Khatib

Date: 23 September 2026 13:00-14:00

Register to attend

Why attend?

Iron deficiency, with or without anaemia, has been shown to be present in about 50% of patients with heart failure. It is associated with a poor quality of life, impaired effort tolerance, and increased mortality and considered an important comorbidity in people with chronic heart failure. The September 2025 update to NICE NG 106 Chronic heart failure in adults, recommends assessing iron status using appropriate tests (e.g. transferrin saturation (TSAT), serum ferritin and haemoglobin). Iron deficiency responds to appropriately provided iron therapy.

How does this work in practice? How do we interpret those tests in the context of heart failure? Which iron formulation should we use?

Attend this webinar to learn more about:

  • The different types of iron deficiency in heart failure

o Iron deficiency

o Iron deficiency with anaemia

  • Choice of formulations

o Oral vs IV

  • Assessment (in the context of Heart Failure)
  • Administration
  • Monitoring

The agenda for the event:

  • 45 minute presentation
  • 15 minute Q&A

Speaker

Dr Rani Khatib, National Specialty Advisor for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at NHS England with a distinguished cardiology background as senior consultant pharmacist in cardiology and cardiovascular research, at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and Associate Professor at the Leeds Institute of Cardiometabolic Medicine (LICAMM), University of Leeds. The Heart Failure Regular Review Online Workshop

Target audience

The Heart Failure Academy events are for healthcare professionals only.

This online workshop is specifically tailored towards generalist members of the multidisciplinary team who will deliver (depending on their role) either structured medication reviews or long term condition reviews in primary care.

Why should I attend?

NHS England have released changes to the GP Contract 26/27 and there is a new indicator to support prescribing of the four pillars of therapy for people living with Heart Failure with reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF).

This online workshop will give you all the tools you need to increase your confidence in supporting this new QoF indicator as well as in delivering regular heart failure reviews in practice.

The content will focus on a general update on heart failure, the different heart failure phenotypes, guidelines directed medical therapy for each phenotype and how to deliver a regular review as outlined by NICE NG 106.

This online workshop has recently been delivered to over 300 GPs, pharmacists and practice nurses in the Doncaster area – here is a snapshot of the feedback:

‘The best Target for some time!’

‘Very comprehensive and informative’

‘Excellent education update on heart failure tailored to primary care’

‘Very useful session with pitched at the right level for care of patients in general practice

These sessions are multidisciplinary, providing a fantastic opportunity to network and share best practice. We will examine local system challenges and how we can work together across sectors to support people living with heart failure to get the best outcomes.

Aim

The aim of this study day is to support healthcare professionals to develop their knowledge and skills to provide a person centred approach to a delivering a regular heart failure review.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this online workshop, you will

  • have an increased confidence in recognising the signs and symptoms of heart failure
  • be able to describe the appropriate referral of people with suspected heart failure
  • recognise and be able to summarise the management of different heart failure phenotypes
  • apply appropriate coding for people living with heart failure
  • apply a person centred, evidence-based approach to regular heart failure reviews
  • describe how to identify when an advance care planning conversation is needed
